It's a directive: On pi day, you make and eat pie. Many bakers have been depending on math since before they learned to sift. Does that mean they understand the concept behind math's most edible-sounding concept?

It's pretty even. Our biggest seller year after year is our key lime. People love our key lime pie. Our second biggest tends to be our chocolate bourbon hazelnut pie. How do you make that little cute pi symbol? The pi symbols were for custom orders. I cut it out by hand with an Exacto knife. That's what I was doing late last night. I printed out a pi symbol from online. I made myself a little template then cut each one by hand.

That's the kind of attention to detail we deliver. How good were you at math in school? I was OK at math. My husband Chris Powell , who is my co-owner, is excellent at math. The first year we were in business, on March 14, we were just crazy busy. It didn't even click for me until halfway into the day why we were so busy.

It was actually a customer who told me. Now we prepare for it. And of course this year is Pi Day of the century.
